  • Guest Speaker: Ian Howard: “The Truth is Black and White”

    June 4, 2026  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Location: This meeting is in St Peter's Church Hall, Free Street, Bishop's Waltham, SO32 1EE

    About Ian Howard

I have been passionate about photography for many years. I live in Kent, UK, with my patient wife, Hazel. Over the years, I have learned a lot as I moved from being an amateur to a semi-professional and then a professional photographer. Along the way, I have taken part in camera clubs, competitions, weddings, commercial shoots, talks, lectures, teaching, art sales, online sales, and building websites.

    About the talk

We will explore the basics of black-and-white photography and discuss what makes a strong black-and-white image.
We will discuss how photographers process their black-and-white images and share helpful tips for achieving the best results.
To wrap up, we will look at a series of images, starting with the original raw files and following the thought process through to the final black-and-white versions. This journey through a portfolio will close out the evening.

    July 2, 2026  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Location: This meeting is in St Peter’s Church Hall, Free Street, Bishop’s Waltham, SO32 1EE

    Prints – ‘Open Category’

    • Members are asked to submit a digital copy of their print to the website upload facility by Wednesday, July 1.
    • Bring your mounted print on the evening, ‘book-in’ at the front and place your print on the specified stand.

    PDI’s – ‘Macro/Close-up’

Macro photography is where a small subject appears life-size or larger in the final image, typically
captured using a dedicated macro lens. The technique is used to reveal intricate details of subjects
like insects, flowers, food or products such as watches or jewellery, often with a minimum
    magnification ratio of 1:1 (life-size).

Close-up photography is a tightly cropped image that reveals significant detail of the subject, making it appear larger than normal and often filling the frame. It can be achieved by moving the
camera closer or using a longer lens for tight framing without being in close proximity. The
purpose is to highlight details and evoke an emotional connection with the viewer by emphasising
the subject's textures, features, or expressions.

All images are required to be uploaded by midnight Saturday, June 27.

    • The upload facility will show a specific ‘Purpose’ – remember, this is a single-league competition.
    • The maximum width of the image must not exceed 1,600 pixels, and the maximum height should not exceed 1,200 pixels. For square images, the size limit is 1,200 pixels by 1,200 pixels
