  • Round 3 Print & PDI Competitions

    July 25, 2024  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Location: This meeting is in St Peter’s Church Hall, Free Street, Bishop’s Waltham, SO32 1EE

Judge – Andrew Mills MA. MEd. CertEd. C&G(Dist).

    Prints – ‘Open Category’

    • Members are asked to submit a digital copy of their print to the website upload facility by Wednesday, July 24.
    • Bring your mounted print on the evening, ‘book-in’ at the front and place your print on the specified stand.

    PDI’s – ‘Wood’

The image must show wood as the main feature. It can be a tree, but again, it must show the feature of the structure (Bark) rather than the entire tree—i.e., not a whole woodland.

    • All images are required to be uploaded by midnight Sunday, July 21.
    • The upload facility will show a specific ‘Purpose’ – remember, this is a single-league competition.
    • All PDIs need to be re-sized to the usual 1600 pixels on the long side and 1,200 pixels on the shortest side; square images should be 1,200 pixels by 1,200 pixels.

    How the evening will run:

    • The Hall will be prepared as usual, and the print stands will be set up.
    • The Print competition for intermediate and advanced leagues will take place in the first half of the evening.
    • During the refreshment break, the screen and projector will be set up.
    • The PDI competition will take place in the second half of the evening.

    Please note

ENSURE YOU UPLOAD YOUR IMAGE TO THE CORRECT PURPOSE.

If you have an issue or believe there is an error with your image upload, please email Kevin at competition@bishopswalthamphotosociety.co.uk, who will attempt to resolve the problem.

Kevin will email a list of entries for the PDI Round on Monday (22nd); please check this for your entry.

Please contact Kevin or any committee member if you are unsure of anything related to the competition ‘process’. Information is in the Member Handbook and on the BWPS website. We can advise on external printing companies, mounting the images, and where to get the mount board.

    Good luck!

  • Member’s Evening

    August 1, 2024  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Location: This meeting is in St Peter’s Church Hall, Free Street, Bishop’s Waltham, SO32 1EE

Dan Clarke will lead the evening,

The evening will have several parts based on requests made at the recent Forum, e.g., Back Button Focussing, Sensor Cleaning, and Screen Calibration. Members who have some experience/equipment for these topics will be on hand to give advice.

Members are invited to work around the room, bringing their questions, laptops, and cameras (plus manuals).

In the first half of the evening:

Nicky Higgens will be providing a 1-to-1 Lightroom Clinic
. The idea is to have a 15-minute slot with Nicky to work through specific issues you may be having with LR. This will be for editing only NOT importing/catalogue issues (others may be able to help with this). Nicky will be happy to receive one image to work on if you wish to show how she would approach editing the image. The number of slots will be restricted by the time available – Nicky will only be able to work with a limited number of people. Please submit your images soon - as it will be first come, first served."

If this method of providing assistance with aspects of different editing software programs is successful, we can run another session at some point!

Dawn will demonstrate Screen Calibration (and also help with Lightroom/Photoshop—resizing/adding stroke border).

Anita Taylor will be on hand to give some helpful information on mobile phone editing apps and general settings. Possibly going out & about to practice.

In the second half, Matthew White will give a presentation on ‘Critique.’

Matthew will be talking about some general thoughts on judges and judging and look at some images that might have been 'controversial' or 'misunderstood' (the Comp.Round 3 images will be on the Laptop).

If there is anything else ‘technical’ not listed here, please give us plenty of notice so we can help.

  • The best "Set of Three" images

    September 26, 2024  7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

    Location
This meeting is in St Peter’s Church Hall, Free Street, Bishop’s Waltham, SO32 1EE

    Judge - to be advised

This is a print competition (not PDI)

This is where members can be a little more creative in their approach by submitting three images that are linked by a theme or subject. This award is based on producing a set of three prints. The images can be mounted together on the same board (as a triptych) or separately in individual mounts. The 3 images will be critiqued together; how the images are mounted, however, is not part of the critique. Members will be asked to produce a digital triptych to upload to the website for admin/web display purposes.

    • Set of Three or Panel Mount Sizes: Your three prints can be either mounted in individual 50x40cm mounts (or smaller) or a triptych (on one backing board).
    • Labelling Prints: One title to cover the whole set of three, please. Usual label with Author and Title. For individually mounted prints, please also add 'Left', 'Middle', and 'Right' to the reverse so we know the order in which to display the images
    • If entering the ‘set of three’ for the Exhibition, the maximum size of the backing board needs to be A1 or less. This is due to exhibition display board restrictions.

The winner will receive a cup, which will be presented at the AGM on Thursday 2nd January 2025
